and is there an age when its too late, and she can no longer have puppies?
and how many could she have?
Please spay your dog. So many Westies end up in rescue. The last thing we need is more pups being born, especially when hundreds of homeless dogs are destroyed in the uk every week. Please do the right thing, book her a spaying appointment.
Both male and female dogs, from what i know, are capable of reproducing from ages 6 to nine months. I can’t really tell when it’s too late, though.
I ran across this link on the net. It’s about spaying though, but it will tell you a lot about your questions.

i would say about 1 year old. maybe you should do a bit more research before you rush into breeding. I’m not sure if there is an age when it is too late as dogs have seasons throughout their lives. In one litter you could expect on average 5 pups. I think its cruel to use your dog as a breeding machine so just have one or two litters and then do the right thing and get her spayed.

With AKC, it will not accept a litter from a dam who has not reached it’s first birthday. The sire should also be 1. As far as old age? That depends on the vet’s recommendations.
If you have a female and plan to breed, buy high protein food and don’t breed every heat. Most dams should have only three litters in a lifespan or it depletes the bone density and could cause early death.

First you should not breed your western highlander terier or any other dog for money or any other reason except to better the breed.
If you are bettering the breed then the western highlander should be at least 2 years or older even though they go into heat by the time they are 6 months old.
so you should do a lot of research if you decide to breed your dog.
they have about 5-8 puppies sometimes more or less but like i said, do your research before you breed. Then there is the cost of getting her checked and the shots for the puppies and all the food and a lot more.
So if you are doing it for the money don’t because you don’t make anything if you do it right.
There isnt any age when its too late but i wouldnt wear the poor girl out with too many litters.
I would stop at four =)
Hope I Helped, Bree xx

Yes, no dog should be bred before they are 24 mos old, this ensures the dog is mature and can handle whelping and the breeding, this is for males or females.
why are you wanting to breed her, is she a show dog, and a champion, if not then she should not be bred, breeding dogs is for improving the breed standard……is both of her parents show, titled champions?????
if the answer is no, then the dog needs to be spayed, it is not cheap to breed a dog, the female and male needs to be tested, for genetic and temerament issues, and all shots, worming and both dogs should have been on Heart Guard Plus since they were 4 mos old, both male and female, this prevents heart worms and hook worms……
both parents should both have all this done to ensure the health of the pups and parents. is the dog AKC registered, if not, then why breed the dog…should not be bred ovet the age of 4, and never more than once a year, and again never either the male or female before they are 24 mos.
have her spayed and save your self a lot of money from all that should be done before breeding a dog….and are an experienced reputable breeder, this question says no, since you have to ask about breeding, we do not need anymore back yard breeders, the sheltters and dog rescue clubs have enough of poor unwanted dogs and puppies.
think it over, before you put your dog through this, ask your self, am I improving her breed, or is it just to sell puppies, if for the money only, then it is for the wrong reason…
anyone that breeds dogs, know it should not be under 24 mos old, they are not mature,. once in awhile, if fully mature, some of the larger breeds can be bred at 18 mos, but no dog should be bred between the ages of 6 mos to 24, with one exception to the large breeds, and if they breed any younger and call them self a breeder, they dont know what they are talking about, or do not care about their dogs, breeding at one yr or younger, you are asking for problems in a young female…..indeed 6 mos to 1 yr…..6 mos is a dogs first heat cycle, and no reputable breeder will breed the first heat or even the second……..

Both dam & sire need to be AT LEAST 2 years old before they’re bred. While the male is sexually mature at a much younger age, he still can’t have any of his pre-breeding testing done before that age. The b*tch needs to be that age for several reasons. First & foremost, she needs to be fully grown before you put the demands of a pregnancy & nursing on her still growing body. Second, young b*tches do NOT make good mothers. Breeding a 1 year old b*tch is the equivellant of expecting a 10 yo child to be a good mother. They will often reject the litter entirely, leaving them orphaned, or worse, can actually harm them. Last, she needs the same testing done as the sire.
Now since you don’t know anything about breeding, I suggest that you start first by determining if both the b*tch & dog are worthy of breeding in the first place. I’m not going to tell you not to breed, because that would be a waste of both our time, but if you think you can make money off of breeding (how many can she have?), you will do it at the risk of your b*tch’s life. You can’t make money unless you cut corners, and that means ALL the testing recommended for your breed & proper diet & vet care during the pregnancy. There is also always the chance of your b*tch needing a c-section & either a small litter or a loss of some or all of the puppies.
As far as the age that she can have puppies until, opinions vary, but the generally thinking goes that at around the age of 6 she should be retired, or after producing 3 litters. Also, it is VERY unhealthy to breed with every heat, and your bitch should be bred every other heat at most.
It really sounds like you’re looking to start your own puppy mill. If you care nothing about the life & health of your b*tch & her litters, then by all means procede. If however, you’re interested in breeding for the right reasons, then please contact your local breed club & ask for a mentor. They will guide you & point you in the right direction.

i would say from about 1 year old to 6 years old should be about the time you should breed.
4-8 pups

The usual age for a litter is between 2 ~ 5 years old.
