I really want to get a westie but i need to know how much it would cost to take care of one. I also need to know how much vet visits are and how often they need to go. Please help me.
~ It depends on how you plan to take care of them.
A very good pet owner will feed high quality food like Innova, Merricks, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae, Orijen, GO!, etc. These can range in price but a small bag you can estimate would be $15.00. It would be good for about two weeks so you are looking at roughly $30.00 a month for food.
Yearly annuals at your vets office will run you between $120-200.00 depending on what is needed and who your vet is.
You will also need Heartgard every month and Fronline Plus or equivalent every 2-3 months. These also range in price depending on where you get them. Heartgard for a 6 month supply for a small dog is approx.$25.00 and Frontline Plus is approx. $40.00 for a 3 month supply.
Also you have to be aware that accidents and emergencies can happen. These can be very expensive. If your dog is injured or breaks a leg you could be looking at $500-$1500.00
You have to think about grooming your dog. Westies need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks depending on cut. One full groom will run you $30-$50 depending on your area.
There are a lot of things to consider when getting a dog. To do it properly you will need to have disposable income.
What is a the best sized crate for a Westie?

I have a westie. In my opinion-the best dog alive!
It doesn’t cost that much. I just bought a new big bag of dog food for her, and it lasted a while. A bag can cost from $10-50 usually-it depends. Usually we take our westie for at least a yearly check up. But it can also cost more for the extra things because they tend to get into some dangerous stuff, or regular stuff but you’re not sure if it’s bad. Of course everydog also needs vaccinations as well, so you need to take her or him for that as well. And finally, if you need training, boarding or grooming, you need to pay for it as well.
But a lot of the costs can be decreased. You can train the dog yourself. Buy a simple $10 book will help, or even a tv show or perhaps even a video on youtube may help a bit. You can put your westie with a family member, or friend if you can’t take them on vacation with you. Grooming- you can just purchase some shampoo and conditioner, and a brush and you’re set for like life. Also, a toothbrush is recommended by vets.
Of course you’ll need treats, toys, and a crate if it’s a puppy. Also a leash and collar. But they don’t cost that much, and if you also have another dog, you can use that stuff as well.
You also need heart medicines, and flea and tick medicines. Also if you spay or neuter your westie. It all depends.
Good luck! Westies are awesome! I can’t even explain how much I love mine. Yeah and know that I think about it she cost a lot, but sooo worth it!

I have a Westie and he hasn’t been cheap – fractured hip at 6 months ($1200), intestinal blockage at a year ($1000) … but of course, this is an outstanding case. The point I’m trying to make is, price should never be a consideration. if your feel you are not financially equipped to deal with emergencies like this, you are not ready for a dog. If you are, we feed our dog Orijen dry food (1 bag at $24.00 lasts about 1 month) and Merrick’s canned food (1 can at $2.99 lasts about a week). You also have to allow for regular vet check ups (a regular visit will run you about $100), plus the costs of vaccinations. Westies are great dogs, just be prepared for them – training is essential, and you will have a loving and fun companion!
